- You MUST begin this recipe the day before. Place the unopened can of evaporated milk in a pan of cold water to cover, and boil for 5 minutes. Cool and chill thoroughly in the refrigerator. Mix the crushed fruits with the sugar, stirring until it is thoroughly dissolved. Pour the chilled milk into a very cold bowl, and whip with a rotary beater as for whipped cream. Add the salt, and fold in the fruits, blending well. Pour into tray and freeze; when half frozen, stir in the chopped nuts if they are desired (if you do this early, the nuts will all sink to the bottom). This ice cream does not need to be stirred while freezing. We consider it the best of all the frozen desserts we have tried.
