  1. Slice tomatoes into 1/2-inch thick slices.
  2. Preheat the oven to 500°F.
  3. Arrange the tomato slices, slightly overlapping, in an oiled 9-inch gratin dish or shallow casserole. Season with salt and pepper, and sprinkle with basil.
  4. Cook the garlic in olive oil in a small skillet over moderate heat, stirring, until fragrant, about 1 minute. Remove from heat and stir in bread crumbs, cheese, and additional salt and pepper to taste. Sprinkle the mixture over the tomatoes.
  5. Bake in the middle of the oven until the crumbs are golden, about 15 minutes.
