  1. sift the flour,tumeric and salt into a large bowl.
  2. using two knives, a pastry blender or a pastry blade cut the cold shortening and butter until mixture becomes crumbly.
  3. Working quickly, add small amounts of water to form dough. do not over water or overwork.
  4. form dough into disc, wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 1/2 hours or overnight.
  5. in a large skillet, heat butter until hot but not smoking.
  6. add in onion and cook until softened, about 4 minutes.
  7. add the garlic and ginger and cook for 1 minute.
  8. add the veggie ground beef, tumeric,cumin and allspice and cook until heated and spices are fragrant, about 10 minutes
  9. add the scallions, parsley, tomatoes and vegetable stock and simmer for about 30 minutes, until Most all of the liquid has evaporated
  10. season with salt and pepper to taste, remove from heat and let mixture cool before assembling the patties
  11. preheat oven at 400 degrees F
  12. on a lightly floured surface, roll out pastry dough and cut into circles about 6 to 7 inches in diameter.
  13. lightly brush the outside edges of the circle with a little almond milk
  14. spoon roughly a 1/4 cup of the filling onto half of the circle and fold the other half of the pastry over so that the edges meet. press to seal and use a fork to crimp the edges together
  15. lightly brish top with a little almond milk and place patties on parchment lined baking sheets and bake until golden brown, about 30 minutes.
