  4. Increase the heat under the skillet to medium-high. Stir in the cooked penne and reserved pasta water, allowing the sauce to simmer and reduce until it thickens, about 1 to 2 minutes.
  5. Remove the skillet from heat and stir in the grated cheese until partially melted.
  6. Top with freshly ground black pepper and serve immediately.
